Autumn is my favourite time of year – the leaves falling from the trees, getting all cosy with a hot drink and generally just getting excited that Christmas is around the corner!
But we’ve got so much to look forward to before Christmas – half term, Halloween, Bonfire night and conker season. I know things will still be a bit different this year but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be any less fun. We’ve put together some fun ideas of what you can get up to over the next month or so.
Let’s go Bonkers for Conkers. Let us know on our Facebook Page where the best places to go hunting for conkers are. Once you’ve got more conkers than you know what to do with why not get your craft on. Here are some great ideas:
Did you know conkers keep spiders away? Keep them in a little pile in the corner and it’ll keep those spiders at bay!
A good old fashioned game of conkers is great fun! But there are so many other games to play with them! Create a conker run, use them to learn to count. I always keep a big pile in our garden – our little girl spends hours playing games with them – it’s brilliant seeing her use her imagination to come up with new and interesting games! She’ll hide them, play shops with them and pretend their food, make mud cakes with them, the possibilities are endless
My absolute favourite Pinterest conker crafting has to be the conker wreath! Our door will be decorated by one by the end of the week the way we’re going! Make a chesnut worm, or makes some great little halloween characters – little spiders – with pipe cleaners and goggly eyes or little pumpkins – simply paint them orange!
Spooky movie night: Family-friendly ideas include Harry Potter, Toy Story of Terror, The Adams Family, Room on the Broom, Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest, Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie, Casper and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Don’t forget to check the age advice before viewing to avoid more frights than you bargained for!
Hide sweets in your garden or around your house: Play some spooky tunes while the kids are searching to set the mood, and give them flashlights or head torches if you want to do it in the dark!
Pumpkin carving contest on zoom: Great for the kids to show off their hard work and catch up with their buddies. You could make it a fancy dress contest too!
Play Halloween Games: Our favourites are Wrap the Mummy (gather some toilet rolls and have teams wrapping up a volunteer), Halloween Bean Bag Toss (throw them into pumpkins with wide mouths), Halloween bingo (instead of numbers use a pumpkin, skeleton, black cat etc on the cards) and sticking hands into a pumpkin to guess what’s inside (jelly, toy rats, etc).
Halloween Crafts: Use paper plates to draw your own pumpkins, make some pumpkin stamps: cut an apple lengthways in half. Cover in orange paint and use as stamps. Paint on green stalks and black face detailing. Peel an apple and leave it on the radiator for a few days – then decorate into a scary witches face!
Halloween Party Food: Oranges decorated as pumpkins and hot dog sausages as severed fingers, with ketchup for added blood!
