All mums have different stories about how they found out they were expecting a baby. Whether you are actively trying to conceive or you suspect you may be pregnant, you may be already experiencing symptoms of pregnancy. You may even have looked up online for common early symptoms. But what if the signs you are getting aren’t that obvious or common?
This is why we’ve decided to ask our community of local mums for those not-so-common symptoms that let the cat out of the bag… so to speak. And while I’m here, if you are starting on this crazy journey of motherhood and you live in Dorset, make sure you join our community group on Facebook. Back to early symptoms; let’s start with my own experience. I’ve had two children and the pregnancies could not have been more different. With my firstborn, I was actually on the pill so I didn’t suspect anything. Of course, now looking back there were many early signs but, because weren’t actively trying to conceive, the idea wasn’t on my mind. I only found out because I fell from a horse. Luckily the baby and I were ok. And I got the news on Christmas Day, which was the best gift ever.
On the other hand, for our second pregnancy, we were definitely trying for baby No. 2. I was playing with my then-toddler and he threw a softball at my nose. It wasn’t hard at all but I had a significant nose bleed. This was the sign. I knew that nosebleeds are common during pregnancy. I took a test when my period was due but I was certain I was pregnant already.
And here are a few other symptoms quoted by local mums:
“Wee smelling like popcorn.” It may seem funny but I’m sure there’s a scientific reason behind it.
“Sore ribs.” I’d imagine this is to do with breasts getting fuller.
“Boobs, boobs, boobs! Even a hug was not an option! This was when the test was negative.”
“The day before I found out, I noticed the veins on my boobs were so bright and blue! Thought nothing of it at the time but since read that it’s a sign.” Basically, any change on your breasts may be a clue.
“Lower backache.” As above.
“Sickness. I couldn’t be in the same room as any hot drinks or anything that was being cooked that smelt strong like mince or eggs!” I can definitely relate to this. I couldn’t stand strong perfumes.
“Sickness and the smell of coffee. I love coffee, can’t live without it but when I got pregnant, I couldn’t bear the smell of it or go anywhere near it. And all through pregnancy I couldn’t touch, smell or even see broccoli.”
“Really bloated tender tummy.”
“I was making a sandwich because I remember feeling ravenous and I suddenly felt like everything around me was moving. I kept getting waves of sickness and I remember saying Ohhhhhh my god!!! I just knew😂. Not planned and a bit scary but you should see her now!! 🥰🥰“
“Overwhelming tiredness, I was falling asleep sitting up lol”.

So there you have it, symptoms can vary widely. As we said on the disclaimer, every pregnancy is different and this blog hasn’t been written to provide medical advice.
