There’s no denying parenthood can be very tough at many stages during the journey. Whether it’s the new-born days or dealing with multiple kids of different ages, parents can often find themselves overwhelmed, and leave their own needs unattended.
We all know how important it is to look after our personal wellbeing but it isn’t always easy to access help. You may feel ashamed to ask. You may feel that you’ll be judged. Or you may not have family around who are able and willing to help. When I had my first baby, a lovely friend popped into our house to check how we were doing. We lived in a countryside village in the north of England and she knew I was a new mum with no family around. I confessed to feeling frustrated with house chores I hadn’t been able to fit in between new-born feeds and nap times, and almost immediately apologised for being ‘silly’; for worrying about things that were ‘not important’.
To this day I’ll never forget what she said back to me. A mum herself, she knew exactly what I was going through. She looked at me with love and compassion and told me, ‘the only thing your baby needs is a happy mum, and if it’s important to you, then it IS important’. So simple, and yet 7 years on, I’m still reminding myself of how true her words were.
And even if you are open to accepting help, you may not know what is available to you. I didn’t know what a Mother’s Help could do for me until I found myself relocating to Poole with a baby and a toddler and no family or friends to help with the move.
Fortunately for families in Poole, Extra Help is here to support you with anything you need.
