As always there are plenty of half term activities for all the family. Whether you want to celebrate Elmer the elephant, make some crafts inspired by nature, or do a treasure hunt, there’s something for everyone.

You’ll see mermaid tails appearing in Boscombe, Bournemouth, Castlepoint and Christchurch libraries during April and May. They’re part of the Julia’s House Great Tail Trail, and have been decorated by local schools. Download the app to follow the trail – there are over 80 tails around BCP.

VE Day 80 celebrations are taking place at Bournemouth, Canford Heath, Christchurch, Ensbury Park and Winton. Ask at the library for more details.

Oakdale Library Garden will be open for the National Gardens Scheme on Wednesday 14 May, 2-5pm. Come and discover this haven of peace and beauty in the heart of the community.

Local author Alex Stone shares her journey from burnt-out accountant to best-selling author at Poole Library on Saturday 17 May, 2-3.30pm. Alex will be reading from her latest novel, The Quiet Sister, and discussing her inspirations and love of Dorset.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2025: STORY GARDEN – ADVENTURES IN NATURE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS

The Reading Agency has just announced the theme for the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge: Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors. This exciting new theme will inspire children to tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature.
